Early Landscape Designs From My Childhood
These are the earliest landscape designs of mine I can find. I did these when I was around 10 - 12 years old, living on a small cattle ranch in Washington State. They were done on simple notebook paper. When these drawings were created, I had never even heard of the profession of landscape architecture or landscape design. I had never seen a plan, elevation, or perspective drawing, and yet I was creating them by instinct. All I knew was that making these plans & drawings gave me intense gratification.
This page is slow to load, but if you have the time, I'd get a kick knowing you waited & viewed these images. And remember! The things you see your young kids doing may actually end up being their Life's Passion! Thankfully, my mother encouraged me to develop my talents. What a wonderful world this would be if we could all encourage kids to explore their talents and try new things!

West Side
Of My Home This elevation sketch shows the west side of my home with my proposed planting scheme. The trees were existing cherry & plum trees. This sketch suggests that the ugly oil drum that was right outside my bedroom window be removed, and some nice flowering shrubs put in its place (I didn't really know what the oil drum was for!). My father did not go for this idea at all - my first "client" input! Some of the suggested plants for this area included Boxwood, Weeping Crab, White Dogwood, Moss Rose, Violets, Forget-Me-Nots, and Deutzia. |

South Side
Of My Home In this elevation sketch you see the south side of my home, which had a wonderful wide porch that extended all across the front. The tree is an existing fir. Proposed shrubs were Honeysuckle, Juniper, Boxwood, Daphne, Deutzia, Potentilla, and a low-growing Flowering Quice. If you look carefully at the bottom of this sketch, you can also see the "plan" view of this planting plan. This area is part of the Front Yard. |

Front Yard
Bordering Pasture This perspective sketch shows the western portion of the front yard. The tree is an existing Weeping Birch. As I look at this now, I smile when I see how carefully I tried to capture the feeling of the birch's beautiful white bark with black markings, as well as the delicate tracery of the foliage. Proposed plants included Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), Boxwood, Mock Orange, Ocean Spray (Holodiscus - I was a native plant lover even back then!), and keeping our existing Peonies. Below this perspective is a plan view. In this drawing (sorry, the perspective drawn on the front shows through!) you can see a rectangular shape. This was an odd concrete trough-like planter that ran across the entire front yard. In this area I proposed Aubrieta, Potentilla, Chrysanthemum, Strawberry, Candytuft, and Creeping Phlox, to name a few. |

South Side
Of The Calf Barn The calf barn was where we nursed orphaned calves. My job was to mix their formula & feed them several times a day. In this perspective sketch you see the south side of the calf barn, as well as the fence separating it from the pasture. Proposed plants were a vine, Japanese Maple, Beauty Bush, and either a Scarlet Maple or a David's Maple for the tree. Below the perspective sketch is the plan view. You can see how I was working with Latin names even back then! |

That Was Fun!
What a nice walk down Memory Lane! Thanks for coming along!
As of June 2002 I have been on an extended medical leave, and am unable to take on new clients. It is too soon to say for sure when I will be able to return to designing, but we are hoping that perhaps in the latter portion of 2003 GardenFoundation's studio will again be open for designing.
