A Naturalistic "Native" Garden In The City

This is a part of the preliminary design that
was presented to the client.  It illustrates how
I hand-render preliminary drawings
with art markers.

What
A small suburban front yard is being transformed into a "woodland edge" landscape. Significant highlights of the project are the drastic reduction in the lawn, and the heavy use of native plants. The entire landscape concept is wildlife-friendly.

Why
The homeowners wanted to make their front yard & entranceway more welcoming and attractive, but didn’t know where to start. They expressed a specific desire to have an emphasis on native plants. They wanted to cut down on the amount of lawn that needed mowing, and hoped to keep overall maintenance chores to a minimum.

How
The lawn has been reduced to function more as a green pathway. It sets off curvilinear beds full of a mix of native & exotic trees, shrubs, perennials, and landscape boulders. Because the yard is not large, the mature size of plants had to be considered carefully. One portion of the yard tends to flood each winter; it will be transformed into a "graveled bog" setting, turning a negative into a positive. The plant materials were selected to ensure interest year-round, be it from flowers, foliage, or bark.

When
Project started in March 2001 with a preliminary client meeting. In April 2001 the conceptual design was ready for review. In June 2001 the final planting plan was completed. Construction has started on the project, and will be completed by the homeowner over a period of time.

As of June 2002 I have been on an extended medical leave, and am unable to take on new clients. It is too soon to say for sure when I will be able to return to designing, but we are hoping that perhaps in the latter portion of 2003 GardenFoundation's studio will again be open for designing.
